Okay, fandom. Honestly. Winry and Riza are not very likely to change their last names when/if they marry!
Winry is continuing her family business and the name of Rockbell is incredibly important to her! (In this panel, she even uses her reputation as a (valid) excuse to follow the Elric brothers and secretly escape from the hostage situation she was in.)
Riza would probably not change her last name, either, and, though she might take up living with Roy, they might not marry for some time/until they have accomplished more of their goals!
(Not only that, but a female taking on a male partner’s last name has deeply sexist roots and I’ve never much cared for the idea!)
Yes, there are some ladies within the FMA universe who have taken their husbands’ last names. It does seem that a majority of those in Amestris keep their patriarchal/married surnames. (However, it’s suggested that Pinako has kept her original name of Rockbell, and Winry also states that it goes back a few generations. Ed and Al keep their mother’s name for various reasons, and Ling and Mei, from Xing, keep their matriarchal clan names.) In spite of their time period, which somewhat mirrors the mid-twentieth century of our own history, I am not entirely clear on the views within their world. (Though it is evident that there is more gender equality.)
Anyway! I believe that Winry and Riza would definitely choose to keep their original names for the reasons I have stated, though!
There is a lot more I could say on it, but I think I’ve rambled enough. I just… I don’t know. It bothers me to no end that people automatically assume that they would change their last names.
