Romance in shounen manga is rarely ever good and is usually tacked on as an afterthought. In most cases, the main character just ends up with his female companion and they walk off into the sunset to go copulate. 

In Fullmetal Alchemist, the relationship between Ed and Winry is handled masterfully. It was never the focus of the story, but it was never so downplayed that the resolution felt like it came out of nowhere at the end. I think that most people knew Ed and Winry were going to get together by her second or third appearance. It wasn’t exactly hard to guess.

Despite that, though, you rooted for them. Ed and Winry spent most the series in different places, but that never made them seem emotionally apart. They maintained contact and they interacted normally whenever they did see each other. And that’s one of the reasons why EdWin works. It’s hard to pinpoint an exact moment where Ed fell in love with Winry and vice versa. It seemed to just happen naturally. Somewhere amidst the chaos of battles and sleuth and traveling they transitioned from childhood friends to lovers. You knew it was coming, yet it never really felt forced.

I could see how some would fault it for not being overtly romantic. They never actually even kiss in the series. But to me, it’s not a problem. Again, it is a shounen. The romance was always going to take a backseat to whatever else was going on. Frankly I’m surprised that they even got married in the end, as opposed to Arakawa leaving it open ended.

But I digress.

What really makes EdWin so realistic is all their little interactions. There are honestly too many to list, but my favorites are: when Winry tries to get Ed to drink his milk, when Winry wants to kill Scar and Ed calms her down, and when Ed and Winry are reunited after being apart for a long time and she sees how much he’s grown. The list really does go on and on, though.

Winry made the leg that Edward stands on and she is the leg that Edward stands on. They compliment each other beautifully.
